Birding in Around Arizona CityOn any given day, millions of people around Arizona are searching the mountains, desert and water shed areas for various species of birds. Bird watching is one of the fastest growing "hobbies" among both locals and our winter visitors in the Arizona City area. At any given time people are out searching not only for native Arizona birds, but also the migratory birds that visit us from as far north as Alaska and Canada. Arizona City was recently noted in the Arizona Republic as one of eight key places in the state for bird watching. Our location between Phoenix and Tucson make us an ideal stop off for all kinds of winged friends as well as the traditional winter visitors we receive from all the United States. Besides being the home for many of Arizona's native birds such as the roadrunner, cactus wren, burrowing owls and the gambel quail, our lakes and ponds boast ducks, geese, pelicans, and other shore birds. Area sod farms attract prairie species such as longspurs and pippets. Also sighted in the area and making Arizona City their home are several nesting pair of turkey vultures. During the day you will see them soaring above the golf course taking advantage of the air currents coming up from the ground. Frequent sightings of other birds include the Blue Heron and the Harris Hawk. Birding maps for southeastern Arizona can be obtained at the Visitor Center along with information on the birding areas around the region. contact the Visitor Center at snlndvc@localnet.com or call us at 1-888-786-3007 or (520) 466-0118. Whether you stop in to visit us on your way to other locations or intend to stay for awhile, take some time to look at our wild life. Peaceful and beautiful are the words that come to mind while drinking a cup of tea or coffee in the early morning hours, watching the sun rise over the mountains, listening to birds calling to one another and watching the quail scurry across the desert.
